Uses for Baking Soda

   Non-Toxic Cleaning and More

You probably have an open box of baking soda in your fridge to fight odors. But do you know how very useful it is everywhere else in your home?

Cleaning your Home

  • Mix one cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar – pour into drains to keep them clear of buildup.  Let the mixture work for 15 minutes then flush with hot water.

  • Clean the inside of your microwave by sprinkling baking soda on a damp sponge and wiping it out. Rinse with water.

  • Clean baked-on messes! Sprinkle on baking soda, mist with warm water, and let sit for 30 minutes. Wipe up and rinse with clear water.

  • Deodorize and cleanse your dishwasher by putting baking soda in the wash cycle.

  • Sprinkle baking soda on a sponge and clean the insides of your microwave and reduce odors.

  • Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom surface of your oven and spray with water to dampen the soda. Let sit overnight and scrub in the morning, rinsing thoroughly.

  • Get rid of grime easily by using half a cup of baking soda in a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse clean for a shiny new floor. This also helps scuff marks.

  • Scrub your bathtub with 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar, and 1 T of liquid detergent.

  • Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to your toilet and scrub to get it clean and shiny again!

  • Remove crayon and marker from the walls by scrubbing lightly with a damp sponge and baking soda.

  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your liquid detergent to get your clothes brighter.

Deodorize Your Home

  • Mix baking soda and a few drops of essential oil together to create your own DIY carpet freshener to shake on the floors before vacuuming

  • Sprinkle baking soda on a carpet, wait 15 minutes or overnight, and vacuum up for rug that looks and smells brand new. By vacuuming baking soda into the body of the vacuum cleaner, you are helping to deodorize the equipment.

  • Sprinkling baking soda on the bottom of your trash cans will keep yucky smells from building up.

  • Make your own air and fabric freshener (sans the chemicals and toxins of store-bought.) Fill a spray bottle with distilled water, add one tablespoon of baking soda and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Shake well.

  • To keep your kitty’s potty fresh cover the bottom of the box with baking soda and add litter on top.

  • Sprinkle baking soda into gym and golf bags to reduce the smell.

  • Place a box of baking soda in your closet to freshen your wardrobe. Add a few drops of lavender oil to ward off moths.

  • Reduce the odor of soot by cleaning the ashes out of your fireplace and placing a bowl of baking soda inside.

  • Shake baking soda into sneakers to keep them fresh until wearing them again.

  • Sprinkle baking soda liberally onto pet bedding, wait 15 minutes or more then vacuum.
